Kanye’s Latest Fashion Collaboration
By MOAM Staff
K anye West has become a force in the entertainment world over the past several years. Known for (his) matter-of-fact interviews, frank opinions and, of course his music, West is currently at the peak of his celebrity. Landing a spot on the “Time 100” list of the world’s most influential people, West has (also) become associated with something many may have found unexpected — the world of high fashion.
The musician did not always have an avant-garde approach to dressing. In fact, in a recent New York Times interview, West says he feels ashamed of how he dressed during the earlier years of his career. As the performer and producer evolved, so did his personal style. His sharp and sometimes androgynous outfit choices — the Givenchy kilt, he donned during his performance at the 2013 Met Gala or the colorful Celine tunic he wore to perform at Coachella in 2011 — often garners much attention and criticism.
West started his shift from sartorial colloquy to fashion designer in 2009, collaborating with Louis Vuitton, West designed a line of athletic shoes for the luxury brand, expanding his reach in fashion. In 2011, West tried his hand at womenswear, and launched a ready-to-wear collection, which debuted at Paris Fashion Week. While the line received lackluster reviews, it did solidify his interest as more than a mere hobby and paved the way for a second (improved) collection in 2012, and collaboration with Italian footwear designer Giuseppe Zanotti.
After taking some time away from fashion to focus on his music, West recently confirmed a much-speculated collaboration with Parisian brand A.P.C France. The capsule collection, aptly named A.P.C. Kanye, includes jeans ($265), T-shirts ($120), and hoodies ($250-$280). A. P. C. Kanye has been two years in the making: the highly anticipated collection sold out within moments, shutting down the company’s website. There is no word on just how many items were made available in the first round, but the sold-out goods are currently available for pre-order.
Despite critics who often disregard West as an egomaniac, there is no doubt both West’s contributions in music and fashion have made an impact on popular culture. With a desired goal to influence, West says he is much more interested in setting trends and selling pieces that the public can connect to emotionally.
West’s latest collaboration with A.P. C. represents a further step in that process — one that, in turn, might allow him to be seen just as profitable in fashion as he is opinionated.
