In 2011, Lady Gaga collaborated with upmarket retailer Barneys New York on a funhouse-themed holiday collection called “Gaga’s Workshop.” Last year, Disney did the same for their “Electric Holiday” collection. This year, Barneys wants its holiday collection to capture New York as the “creative and cultural epicenter of the world,” says Mark Lee, chief executive officer of the multibrand Upper East Side retailer. Who other than Jay Z, rumored to collaborate with the department store since July, would Barneys choose to partner with for their next holiday project? Born and raised in New York, and having successfully conquered music, sports and fashion, Jay Z is the embodiment of what it is to be a native of this bustling city.
Standing for Barneys New York Shawn Corey Carter Gallery, the “BNY SCC Gallery” was inspired by “the slickness, energy and innovation of New York City,” explains the multi-talented mogul. “The items chosen, the amazing designers that participated, the windows, the design of the BNY SCC Gallery — [represent] a perfect example of a unique and groundbreaking collaboration that I hope demonstrates how inspiring New York has been to me.”
Ranging from $70 to $33,900, items include a black leather backpack, an 18-karat-gold double ring, men’s watches with black alligator or polished black ceramic straps by Swiss timepiece maker, Hublot and tailored jackets — all cohesive within a white, black, silver and gold color scheme. Although many products are geared toward male consumers, the collection features select home décor items (everyone can enjoy) such as a cashmere blanket designed by luxury lifestyle brand, The Elder Statesman. Other collaborating brands include Acne, Lanvin, Balenciaga, Balmain, Proenza Schouler and Rick Owens.
The collection is available for purchase Nov. 20 through Jan. 3 in New York, Boston, Chicago, Beverly Hills and San Francisco. A limited quantity of some designs will be available for pre-order online.
25 percent of all profits will benefit the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. The organization grants scholarships to students who faced adversity to receive a higher education. This year will mark its 10th anniversary.
